Ross Barkley has been in the headlines reasonably often recently and, despite his upturn in form, they’ve not been overly pleasant.
Attacked in a city centre Liverpool bar last weekend, Ronald Koeman recently revealed the England international soon needs to make a decision over signing a new deal with his boyhood charges or not.
”If he doesn’t sign a contract we don’t want him to go into the last year. For players if they still don’t know that decision by the end of the season, something is wrong.”
Indeed, according to the Daily Telegraph, the 23-year-old has been told he must put pen to paper on a £100k-per-week contract by the end of the season if he wants to make sure he’s not sold.
Barkley’s struggles for consistency have been well documented over the past few years. Still, he remains a huge talent and could potentially be the centrepiece from which Everton grow into a new era, under the ownership of Farhad Moshiri.
The importance of English players to clubs on these shores cannot be understated and, as a local boy, Barkley would surely be an ideal poster boy for the dawning of a new era at the club.
However, should he refuse to sign a new deal, can Everton afford not to sell him?
